The 13th Annual Great Vallejo Ducky Derby will once again captivate thousands on the
afternoon of the 4th of July at Vallejo's
scenic waterfront. And just as in the previous years, you
will be able to purchase a chance at winning great prizes while
supporting the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce and the Vallejo Rotary
Club in their annual drive to supply every Vallejo third-grader
with a full-size dictionary of their very own.
Description
of the Event:
The Great Vallejo Ducky Derby is a rubber duck race on the
4th of July at Vallejo's Waterfront. Approximately, 10,000 rubber
ducks will be released in the Mare Island Strait near the Vallejo
Ferry Terminal Building in a frantic race to the finish line. The
individually numbered ducks are carried towards victory by the
current for approximately fifty yards. As they approach the finish,
much like the final moments of the film "Chariots of Fire",
only the five strongest ducks will emerge victorious. The five
yellow warriors are whisked to the winner's circle, cheered
on by an adoring crowd of thousands. The winning numbers are
verified, and the corresponding names of the winning ticket-holders
matching the numbers will be confirmed. To conclude the event,
the winners, as well as their prizes, are announced to the crowd.
Purpose of the
Event:
The annual Ducky Derby is a cooperative fund-raiser organized
by the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce and the Vallejo Rotary Club.
Numbered tickets for the race are sold throughout the community
by teams made up of Chamber and Rotary members, businesses and
non profit organizations. The funds raised by ticket sales, after
expenses for the event are deducted, are used to provide third-grade
students at all 17 public elementary schools, 4 private schools
and 3 Catholic schools in Vallejo with a hard-bound, children's
dictionary that is theirs to keep. Over the first 12 years
of the event, the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club have provided
over 10,000 dictionaries to Vallejo schoolchildren.
Marketing of the Event:
The event takes place on the same day as the 4th of the July parade
and celebration in Vallejo. The tickets, which sell for $5, are
sold actively all the way up until race time. Ads announcing
the event are placed in consumer publications like the Vallejo
Times-Herald and the monthly Grapevine, as well as in organizational
newsletters like the Chamber's Vallejo Business and the
Rotary Club's weekly Propeller. Marketing posters are placed
in storefronts, schools and civic areas throughout Vallejo. The
event will also be marketed on local radio, television and on
various web sites, including www.visitvallejo.com.
